Common Questions

Everything You Need to Know

Straight answers to the questions we hear most often from Alpena drivers.

What do I need to bring to my driving test?

Bring a valid learner's permit, proof of identity, and your vehicle registration. If you're using your own car for the test, make sure it's registered, insured, and in running condition. We'll provide the rest.

Do I need an appointment or can I walk in?

Appointments are recommended to avoid waiting, but we do accommodate walk-ins when possible. Call (989) 358-2000 to check availability and reserve your slot.

Can I take my test in a language other than English?

Yes. We offer testing in several languages to accommodate our community. Call ahead to let us know which language you prefer so we can arrange the right examiner for you.

How long does the driving test take?

A typical road test lasts about 15–20 minutes. This includes the pre-drive vehicle check, the driving portion through Alpena's test routes, and a brief debrief afterward.

Do you offer driver education for teens?

Absolutely. We offer state-approved driver education courses for teenagers, including classroom instruction, online modules, and behind-the-wheel training. It's the best way to prepare for both the permit test and the road test.

What if I fail my driving test?

Don't worry — it happens more often than you'd think. We'll review what went wrong, give you targeted feedback, and help you schedule a retest. Many of our students pass on their second try after a little extra practice.
